Neonatology

Neonatology is a big focus in my life. for those of you who don’t already know, neonatology is the medical specialty of taking care of new born babies, sick babies, and premature babies. The word neonatology actually means the study of the new-born. Ever since my little brother was born on June tneonatologyenth nineteen ninety eight, I have wanted to be a neonatologist.

Every day of my life I focus on what I’m going to do to get to that point. You might wonder why my little brother being born inspired me to do this. Well, he was 6 weeks premature and couldn’t breathe on his own. I have always had a soft spot for babies and for me to see that a neonatologist could make all the difference in whether the excited, joyful, overwhelmed mother and family can take their baby home healthy or not, was mind boggling to me. I have never forgotten the day the doctor came into my mom’s room and told her that there is a big chance my little adorable brother would not make it. This was the worst news anyone could ever get. and to think he wouldn’t be here today without the neonatologist saving his life, its crazy. I was five years old at the time and i have never let go of my dream to one day make a mother and their family’s fading dream, come true.

I would love to learn more about being a neonatologist, because the more I know, the more stepping stones I am closer to my goal.

Anorexic without knowing…
Posted on October 2nd, 2009 at 11:45 am by and

anorexicWhen the word anorexic or anorexia comes up,  the immediate thought in someones mind is starving yourself. But really someone can be anorexic without even knowing so. Starving yourself is the most common way of being anorexic. The other ways are ways that people don’t even think about or don’t even notice what they are doing. For example someone who is uncomfortable eating in front of others, or someone who is constantly counting the calories they consume in a day. It was very surprising to me that these were symptoms of anorexia because being a teenage girl, this just sounds normal. I am surrounded by girls my age always counting calories and worrying about how skinny they are compared to other people. I am also surrounded by girls who worry about eating in front of certain people because they might think they are a “pig” or they might eat more than who they are with and that would “look bad.” People tend to just over look these reasons because they eat, just not all the time, so they cant be anorexic if they are eating… not true. another way someone is considered anorexic is if they are at least 15% below normal weight for their hight, age, and build. To a girl my age being below the expected weight is like getting a compliment because that means that you are skinnier than most people your age, but really it is a serious subject that needs to be dealt with, not something to smile about. Someone who isnt anorexic or doesnt care about these things wonders what goes through someones mind to do that to themselves? Well if you pay attention to the actresses in movies, or the models on tv, or the “pretty” girls in school, theres one thing they all have in common, they are skinny! The tabloids and trends make people who arent as skinny feel like thats the only way they will be accepted. Well, you might get accepted but if you keep up the habits of an anorexic person you wont have the chance to be accepted very long because the health issues that come along with the acceptance are life altering. The results of becoming anorexic are not worth it when you could work out and still enjoy food and your life as a healthy happy person. What i mean by life aultering is shrunken bones, mineral loss, low body temperature, irregular heart beat, perminant failure of normal growth, developement of ostoporosis, and bulimia nervosa, anorexia along with these symptoms can cause death. Heres an interesting fact, one percent of teenage girls in the US develope anorexia nervosa, and up to 10% of those die as a result. If you start being anorexic as a teenage girl you may not be able to become pregnant and if you do, the chances of having a mis-carrage is much higher. Anorexia is something that needs to be stopped but no one can stop it very easily once they start beecause it becomes a habit. Working out is a much better solution and people, mostly girls in their teenage years need to be aware of this and what could potentially happen to them in the future if they start this habit.
